The belief that products (food but not only food) are much more healthy and good as much as they are “neighbours” is growing. The ideal would be that of “Km 0”, products that grow in your own garden, or shops underneath your apartment, or factories that can be seen through the window (if not disturbing, of course). In fact, this is about a “closeness” that seems more emotional and affective than mileage. And as if the things we know and are part of our familiar territory were more reliable, more controllable, less subject to the risk of manipulation or deception. Two very brief remarks on the subject. One is that we are before the transfer from people to things, namely that we transfer to the things (products) a emotional principle valid (or even intuitive) for relationships: I trust most people I know who are part of my history but not new people that I know little or nothing of. Apart from the fact that even this principle is misleading people (remember the saying “look at me from my enemies, friends look at me God?), can we consider it also valid for the products? We are confident that the milkman of the valley where my grandparents were born will give me products that are good and healthy? Second observation: the industries, brands, modern distribution are also born to give security and reliability of controls that an individual artisan or farmer cannot give, and today these standards and controls are perhaps the most delicate and necessary than before …
